چکیده

We describe the preparation and electro-optic characteristics of a color display which makes use of the selective reflection of cholesteric droplets embedded in a polymer film. The polymer film is formed by a UV-curable adhesive, as opposed to the thermoplastic polymers which have been used previously. The new systems are easy to prepare and suitable for operation at room temperature. They show fair contrast, reasonable threshold voltages and enhanced switching

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Flakes—a New Form

LLE Review, Volume 74 139 The last 20 years have seen a growth of mixed-media systems in which cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC’s) are one component. These include polymer-dispersed CLC’s1 in which the CLC’s are confined to microdroplets within a continuous isotropic polymer and CLC’s in gels2 in which there is a small amount of polymer to stabilize the CLC structure. In either case, the contin...

Dynamics of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals

We have studied the electrooptic properties of droplets of cholesteric liquid crystal dispersed in a polymer. Application of AC electric fields to the droplets leads to a conversion of the droplet from a nonreflecting to a selectively reflecting appearance. When the field is suddenly

Theory of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals.

A mean field theory is presented to describe cholesteric phases in mixtures of a polymer and a cholesteric liquid crystal. Taking into account an anisotropic coupling between a polymer and a liquid crystal, we examine the helical pitch, twist elastic constant, and phase separations. Analytical expressions of the helical pitch of a cholesteric phase and the twist elastic constant are derived as ...

Polymer-Stabilized Blue-Phase Liquid Crystal Cured with a Visible Laser

We report a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal (PSBPLC) cured with a visible laser in an in-plane-switching (IPS) cell. Its electro-optic properties are compared with those of a conventional PS-BPLC cured by ultraviolet (UV) light. Besides, a PS-BPLC grating is fabricated using visible-laser holography. Author
